Ageing is a decline in physiological competence that
inevitably increases and along with other forms of environmental stress, create
number of physical, economical, social and physiological problems. In India, a
‘senior citizen’ is define as a person aged 60 year and older (Timiras, 1972).

As an individual ages his or
her body changes and the ability to deal with the demand of an environment usually
decreases. Their senses of sight, touch, hearing, and smell tend to decline.
Also their physical abilities are reduced and certain task such as stretching,
lifting, and bending becomes more difficult. In addition, they also experience
a slowing of judgment and reaction time. As a result, they cannot respond as
quickly as when they were younger. Intellectual function and cognitive skills
due to aging makes elderly people dependent more and more on others in daily
living activities like dressing, feeding self, etc. (Nagananda , et.al,2010;
Zamperlli, 2013). These normal changes in perception, physical abilities,
judgment, and muscular dystrophy make them more prone to accidents due to the
environment hazards, unsafe behaviors (Agan, 1956; Cresse, 1968) and structural
design of home (Hurlock, 1981).

Home accidents are major cause of death and injury and contribute
substantially to potential years of life lost (Dodai, 2010).  Accidents among older people occur most
commonly at home in the bedroom. A simple fall that result in a broken bone can
become a serious, disabling injury that limit one’s independence. Falls were
ranked as the second leading reason for accidental or unintended injury deaths
in the world.

Older person, whose bones are often less dense and more brittle, are
especially vulnerable to serious injuries from bathroom accidents. They pull
themselves from the chair using their shoulder rather than arms, which made it
more difficult to stand up if they had arthritis in their shoulders (Xiang, 2013).

Older people
want building that enables them to stay independent ( Sarkar, 2009). The
bedroom is a place where most of the time is spent. A bedroom is a room for
personal activity, generally containing at minimum a bed, wardrobe, and chair.
An ideal bedroom usually includes at least bed, dressing, wardrobe, mirror,
balcony, table, chair, etc. The bedroom is a place where most of the time is

Bedroom can have
as much as personality and individuality as any other room in the home, which
can be achieved with a few changes at little cost. Bedroom is probably most
used room in the house; instead of being taken for granted as a standard. For
designing a bedroom            for
elderly it needs special care, comfort and safety. Designing a bedroom for
elderly needs special care, comfort and safety. A well designed, supportive
environment may help older person to utilize their homes more fully, more
safely, and allow them to live independently in their homes longer.

Demand for the
good design and layout needs to be flexible to accommodate challenging care or
support needs.  The accommodation should
be well planned, design and specified with an extremely pleasant atmosphere
with allotment of the space for recreation and space for fresh air like gardens
(Housing Learning and Improvement, 2009). The infrastructure and the material
used in the bedroom should be such that they prevent accidents to the inmates.
In both cases special care should be taken to provide for their comfort and
safety.
